Scattered Arts is situated at 6 Newman Avenue, Camp Hill on the south side of Bris, about 10 minutes from the CBD. Margi has a joint exhibition with fellow co-op member water colourist, Paula Stanton. Work is on show and for sale untill the end of April, so do get along, there is bound to be something that catches your eye. Combined Paula and Margi are showing approximately 60 works, so there is plenty to choose from. Then when you get a moment please leave a comment, they'd both love to hear from you.

Hello there, it's the three of us Eddie, Archie and Cubbie. Well we've been just about stir crazy these last few weeks, we've not been able to get out and have a bit of a run. However today the humans took us all for a bit of an adventure, and boy oh boy, did we need it. This rain might be o.k. for ducks, but it's no good for
Fox Terriers, we like to be out and about, chasing lizards, and investigating everything we see. But most of all we love to be racing through puddles, getting wet and filthy and then falling asleep because we're so tired.

Looking back towards the CBD, it looks a picture perfect day, and if it wasn't for the flooding river, it would be. The speed of the filthy muddy deluge was estimated at around 30 kph, boats ripped from their moorings, pontoons, shipping container, and family belongings were all seen rushing on their way out of the mouth of the Brisbane River and into Moreton Bay. Here, peeping through the trees along the top of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, you can see the William Jolly Bridge. One of the many busy links across the Brisbane River to the beautiful city of Brisbane. The muddy flood waters are swirling around the pylons, trapping debris carried along by the current and creating whirlpools.

Looking down to the park and recreation area at the base of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs late yesterday afternoon, this was the sight that greeted ones eyes. To the right is a picnic table, but everything, paths, lawns, safety railings etc., all completely covered with the swirling, filthy, stinking, flood water. Chin up Beautiful Brisbane.

This is just one of the many boats which were washed down the Brisbane River this week. I can imagine the proud owners of this lovely little boat, sitting there on their pontoon, planning their next fishing adventure, or trip across to the islands for the day. It's heartbreaking, such devastation and destruction, along with loss of precious lives. Mother Nature can be such a force to be reconned with.

Well, I can't see much house work being done in future, (it's me again, Cubbie) once the mistress places her self in this lovely swinging seat and her nose in the latest Jeffrey Archer novel, there'll be no telling when she'll surface again. Who knows, we may never be fed again. I've heard her say how comfortable it is and how she dozed of the other day. None of these things are really good signs, though I have to agree with her. When she was reading the other day I was on her lap and I had no trouble in dozing off, so there you are. However I think the mistress will be pretty mad if she finds a tuft or two of the cats hair in her lovely new swinging seat, it's out of bounds to felines. I have a feeling something might be said.

Judging by the comments from other members of our K9 family, I'm beginning to think there's been some pretty sloppy behavour over the Festive Season. I certainly wasn't involved as you can see by my bright eyes and smiling face. 'Early to bed early to rise' that's my motto, and of course with age comes wisdom. It's always lovely to have friends to meet you on your return, if only from a trip out on the bay. These fellows had a lot more than a "howdy doody" on their minds, they were waiting in keen anticipation of a feed, but unfortunately there was nothing on the menu. Another beautiful day on the bay, we even heard part if the race called over the the p.a. system on a large grey boat.

If you couldn't be at the track on Melbourne Cup Day, the next best thing, maybe the best thing was to be out on beautiful Moreton Bay, getting back to nature, trudging through the Mangroves at low tide, feet covered in mud and getting away from it all, well that is how we spent Cup Day. Well it was just so tempting, we, (that's Cubbie and me, Archie), both knew the mistress had this wonderful bag of teddies in the cupboard. She's always been most carefull to make sure we're outside so we wouldn't get into mischief, anyway we've had a couple of rainy days and dogs never forget where fun stuff is, especially if it's something they shouldn't get into. So we were caught big time, we ruined two teddies, and the mistress was not impressed. Now we've been banished from the house, we've had to put jumpers on, and really behave ourselves. Well, hello, it's me Cubbie, I'm really just a normal little puppy, but put me into an outfit like this and I immediately become a Fashion Icon. How good do I look ? The mistress has me all decked out in leather and fur, I look so cool, an outfit like this deserves a night out on the town or something like that, I simply must do a bit of showing off. This is three new outfits this week, is there no stopping them, throwing money around as if there's no tomorrow - I love it.

Today Brendon Watson, owner and trusty tour guide from Brisbane Bay Tours, (contact him on 31343260), invited several, volunteers from the Wynnum Manly Tourist and Visitors Information Centre, for a wonderful morning on the Bay. "Where would you like to go"? was the question. We all agreed it was the perfect day to visit St. Helena Island. So after safety instructions from our Skipper we were on our way. The skies were bright and clear, the water calm and inviting, all the conditions just perfect for our adventure back into history. We had a smooth and comfortable trip taking only about 10 to 15 minutes.

The Hell Hole of the Pacific.

St. Helena was a quarantine station, and prisoners made the journey across the waters of beautiful Moreton Bay by whaleboat. When they arrived they were put to work clearing the scrub on the island and quarrying stone for use in the building of accommodation for the new quarantine station. This all happened during the mid 1860's. When completed St Helena housed some of the countries worst criminals, murderers, and crimes of violence such as manslaughter, shooting and stabbings, rapists, and men convicted of assault. The prisoners were severely punished by being lashed and confined to dreaded dark underground cells, they were also gagged. It is no wonder St. Helena had such a fearful reputation, being referred to as the "Hell hole of the Pacific" and "Queensland's Inferno". Here on the left we see more of the quarantine station ruins and on the right a view back to the modern bustling city of Brisbane, capital of Queensland. Here is what remains of one of the ovens used as part of the bakery on St Helena Island. The door is open and one could be excused for imagining the aroma of hot freshly baked bread, just taken from the oven and ready to eat.

More of the remaining buildings and high enclosure. In 1799 Matthew Flinders described the island as one of the "Green Isles" however it wasn't named St. Helena untill 1826.

Here are a few visual memories of my recent visit to New Zealand. This of course is the "Silver Fern', emblem of New Zealand. It's to be seen everywhere, growing along the edges of the road, clinging to the side of the mountains amongst pine trees and nestled along the border of bush tracks leading to scenes of beauty and wonder. The Silver Fern is lush and green on it's delicate upper surface, but it's not till you look at the under side that it reveals it's 'silver' lining.

This lovely fresh creek is on the north island. It's quiet and peaceful and one could sit here with a good book and spend time just soaking up everything you can see and hear. The pace is slow, and life is pretty enjoyable.

The Gum Diggers.

I visited the reconstructed workings of the Gum Diggers on the west coast of the North Island. The site of the original diggings has been developed to show visitors how the workers lived and worked under rather difficult circumstances. It was cold, cramped and very uncomfortable, but their reward of the beautiful Kauri Gum or Amber as we call it, was well worth it. The Kauri Museum, a must visit when in N.Z. has the most amazing display of Kauri Gum, do visit when you next visit The Land of the Long White Cloud.

I just love taking pics of old things and this old boat was just sitting on the side of the road waiting for me to drag out the camera. So here she is in all her glory, I wonder how long she has been waiting for me, some time I suspect. New Zealand has a rather slower pace of life I feel, so maybe the boat owner will get around to restoring her to her former glory one day.

I walked around the beautiful Blue Lake, a distance or around 5 - 6 kms through tall trees, tree ferns and lovely lush green undergrowth, past small 'beaches' seeing the odd boat on the water. There are pine trees everywhere as timber and tourism are New Zealand's main industries. Catch one of Stradbroke Ferries big blue and white ferries and excape to Straddie. The trip will take around 35 - 40 minutes, and you'll have a fantastic time exploring one of the historic islands of Morton Bay. I went along with a party of other volunteers from the Wynnum Manly Tourist and Visitors Information Centre. Our day, a 'Famil', was spent visiting various places of accommodation, and areas of scenic beauty. It was time well spent and thank you to everyone who made our day so special. Secluded Beaches.

There is nothing I can say that will do this beach justice. This is Frenchman's Beach, on North Stradbroke Island. It's totally unspoilt with fresh clear rolling surf, just as nature intended. Catch the ferry, take your car and explore this lovely island with all it's history.

Here is part of the rugged coast line of Straddie, the water is so blue and clear it's amazing. We saw dolphins surfing, probably ten or so of them, it just takes your breath away. Visit North Stradbroke Island and be amazed.

Hey. . . It's me again, Cubbie, I told you they wouldn't be able to resist posting my pic up here again. . . . .and I was right. I may be little, but I do know what these humans are like, in a word . . . they're sloppy. I've just done a few laps of the garden, also in the garden too I might add, I've trodden in fresh poo and I smell pretty bad, but they still pick me up and cuddle me and say what a little darling I am. Have they no sense of smell at all? I know the human nose is not a keen as, say, my nose for instance, but they must have something seriously wrong to not notice the dreadful stench, or else they just adore me, maybe that's it, I'm lovely.

Meet Cubbie - new kid on the block

Hello I'm Cubbie, and I'm the new kid on the block. I was greeted with a rather mixed reception I have to say, it's varied from curiosity, with lots of who ha and sniffing, to licking and lots of love being shown, it's very confusing. I'm only 13 weeks old and pretty small. They say I'm a cross between a Mini Foxy and a Jackie, so it's no wonder that I'm so lovely. I'm sure to be up here again very soon, so watch out for me.

Hi there, it's me Eddie, I've had a fantastic day today. Our family has just purchased one of those things they call a "Tinny". It floats on the water, roars very loudly and goes very fast, especially when the mistress says, "give it a bit of stick darl" I thought you only got the stick when you dug up the Spanish Walking Irises, or carried your dinner inside to eat on Nana's carpet, but I was wrong. Anyway because it was Valentines Day we took the tinny out for a run up Tingalpa Creek, slowing down and showing consideration for others when necessary naturally. Nana's knuckles were very white, she was hanging on very tightly I noticed. We didn't do any fishing, maybe next time. What a great day.

Can you imagine Australia Day without a Sausage Sizzle somewhere, why it would be like going fishing and catching nothing, something would be seriously missing. But this young couple weren't missing out. I can smell the sausages and onions right now. What a great way to spend such a special day, then home a little later to watch Ricky and the Boys do us proud. You might have guessed I'm a bit of a cricket fan too. G'day all, it doesn't matter how hot it is, if you're proud enough to drape our beautiful Australian flag around your shoulders when its 36 degrees, I say good on you mate. There's always a breeze off the bay and plenty of h2o to cool you down. In the park on the Esplanade at Manly, great celebrations were to be had on Australia Day morning. There was a free sausage sizzle and pancakes to be had, thanks to the hard work of the services clubs and their members. Greetings of "Happy Australia Day"! were flying through the air thicker than a swarm of starving locusts, and of course there was "That Flag", a loved and cherished part of our very being. Don't ever let me hear talk about changing our flag, it's simply blasphemy to even think of it. Why are they calling me Freckles ?

Well we've had such hot weather lately that a decision was made to give me a good clipping. Now they're calling me Freckles. It felt a little strange at first, but I soon got used to it. It's me, Archie, yes I know you can't see my face, I do look 'different' and just check out what she's done to my tail, it looks like an artists paint brush ! However, because I look so handsome, the mistress thought it was time to give me a dancing lesson, I was so tired and full of Christmas food I just couldn't raise my sorry rear end from the kitchen floor. Well I just can't believe, Christmas and New Year have come and gone again. This festive season was much quieter in our home. Gifts were opened on Christmas Eve again this year, accompanied by Egg Nog. Who said "You have to be sitting around a log fire with snow on the ground outside to justify enjoying Egg Nog", certainly not me. Christmas Day was delightfully peaceful in the true sense of the word. A relaxing brekky, an afternoon paddle on one of our beautiful local creeks in the kayaks, (Foxies on board too), then home to more relaxation and more Egg Nog, with friends and family visiting from Boxing Day onwards. This arrived with one of our guests, yummy, yummy ! Thanks a million John.

Merry Christmas folks. Well you can see by my proud and noble stance that I'm the leader. I can handle all this fuss from the humans and anyone else for that matter, I just love it. I don't mind having bows stuck on me, everyone knows that I'm no pussy, and talking about Pussy, I'll just let you in on something....the reason why there is no photo of Puss on the blog. She has fallen from favour in a really big way. While the humans were just away for 5 minutes at a place they call the 'bottle shop', purchasing ingredients for the Christmas Egg Nog, Puss devoured one of three chicken pies which were thawing on the kitchen bench, waiting to be placed in the oven when the humans returned. It wasn't a pretty sight I can tell you, little bits of pastry and chicken gravy on the floor.... the humans weren't happy Jan. Anyway Puss has missed out this year, and there'll have to be some serious mouse catching before she'll be in the good books again. Merry Christmas from me Eddie.

Have you noticed how the humans are really funny about putting ribbons and bows on everything that'll stay still for a split second. Well I hate to say it but the mistress has caught up with me too. Wow ! Thank heavens they're ours. Four noisy, low flying choppers, over the top of the mango trees in Brisbane is certainly a different site. Over the house they came 4 or 5 times during the day, and then to scare the wits out of every individual watching t.v. that night, they did it all again a couple of times. Actually I like any type of aircraft and seeing them flying so close was very interesting. Thanks for being out there and training hard. It's good to know we are well looked after in the Lucky Country.

Slipping on the Brisbane River.

I've never seen a boat of any type being slipped, so this little adventure was all new to me. Here The Visitor has finished her yearly slipping and is gently being cradled by massive slings, then slowly taken back to the river. It's a delicate operation and one requiring lots of care concentration and expertise.

Here, I'm looking back at the new construction taking place as we are heading towards the mouth of the river. Every time I travel across the bridge I can't help trying to have a bit of a 'sticky beak' at the progress taking place, but seeing it all from water level is totally different. Here is a different view of the Gateway Bridge, both the existing bridge and the new bridge being built. It's a mighty construction and very different when viewed from below. One can't help wondering how all those enormous concrete sections have been maneuvered into place so precisely.

Yep ! it sure is a dog's life, racing around in the water, chasing the plovers, or should I say being chased by the plovers. I'm Archie and I'd like to say the humans make a great fuss of the three of us, we really are three pretty spoilt pooches, but that's o.k. we love them in return, keep away unwanted cats etc., etc., and in general are totally devoted to them. Time for a swim, the weather is hot, and I've one of my two best mates with me. Apart from the humans that is, so it must be time for a trip down to the bay for a bit of a dip. There is always the stick to chase or swim out to retrieve. The humans always take along a dish and some water for us to drink, it's pretty thirsty business this swimming in salt water. Just thought I'd mention, I'm Eddie, the handsome one with the stick in my mouth and that's my daughter Scout right by my side, (Archie's in the other picture). I've just had a lovely few days aboard The Visitor, my brothers beautiful catamaran. I'm not a lover of boats as I suffer from motion sickness at the drop of a hat, or should I say at the weighing of an anchor. If I do manage to dodge the effects of a rocking boat, I then have the problem of getting back my 'land legs' when I head for shore . Oh my goodness, what a horrible feeling to be sitting in a chair while all around is swaying gently, no I'm not a sailor, not even on anything as stable and luxurious as The Visitor. Why wasn't I consulted ?

Yes..... well that's what I'd like to know. If they'd asked me, Eddie in the very beginning, I would have told them in no uncertain terms that you just can't expect an old man, such as myself to doss down, permanently mind you, with a younger female, Scout, and a mere lad Archie. What were they thinking ? Anyway, last night was, shall we say a 'first night try out' to see if we could all co-exist in a friendly manner. It didn't work. I was allowed, as I should have been, to enter the new house first and therefore claimed it as my own, the other two, well I just tolerated them until the humans had gone to bed, then it was eviction time. Being a coolish night the other two carried on, i.e. trying to get through the closed Dog Door, several times, and scratching claws down the security screen repeatedly. This continued until one of the humans finally arose from slumber to let them inside. Scout settled down on a couple of old dressing gowns and a bit of a blanket, and Archie sneaked under the mistresses feather doona. I don't know, they don't make these young ones out of tough stuff, they're such softies these days. Anyway, the humans, whom I think are a little soft too, were off to the pet shop today to purchase another 'house', gosh the skies the limit around here, I now have my own batchelor pad, while the other two have to share accomodation. It sure is a dog's life.

Just purchased, new low set residence ready for tenants. This lovely new home is suitable for communal living of up to 3 parties, all occupants must be on excellent terms with each other, no growling, snapping, or biting will be tolerated. No digging in the owners garden, or urinating in other than designated area will be permitted. In exchange for this lovely new home the occupants must be on duty 24 hours a day, be willing to chase and expel any trespassing felines, and hawkers, and in general continue to be the 3 loving little Fox Terriers they have always been.

This group of handsome pipers looked fantastic, thank you all for the great music. You all looked so impressive marching along in the sunshine, a pipe band always seems to add that something special to any procession. I would think the bagpipes would be a pretty difficult instrument to play.

This great dog was rounding up three ducks and obeying his masters every command. I have two ducks and five hens myself, and sometimes I certainly could do with a dog like this. Isn't he fantastic. I think I'll take Archie down to the Spring Fair, and get this dog to give him a few lessons. Nothing like learning from the professional.

The Spring Festival is here again and the Wynnum - Manly foreshore is a buzz with activity. I jumped on my scooter and took a very quick trip to the waterfront to check things out. Things were just starting to crank up, a singer was on the main stage, and people with their little children were beginning to arrive. This is part of the scene that greeted me, (sorry there's no audio).

Today Manly Boat Harbour Marina is shrouded with a red dust haze from the West. It's hard to believe these two images were taken from practically the same spot on the Esplanade at Manly, but obviously on very different days. This occurrence doesn't happen too often thank goodness, but when it does it certainly presents a startling contrast to the normal sparkling water front we are used to.

On a normal day this is how the Manly Boat Harbour Marina looks. Sparkling, calm, clean and simply stunning. The perfect place to have your beautiful pleasure craft moored. Close to all the amenities of Manly, lovely eating places, specialty shops, the Manly Hotel, the Information Centre where the staff are always so happy and helpful, and so much more. Aren't we all so lucky to live here, it's perfect.

Here we have the latest addition to our family, his name is Billy and he flew into our lives a couple of months ago. He has a very loud voice, a very good appetite, a very strong bite, and a very loving nature. Try as we may to teach him to talk, we have been unsuccessful, for unfortunately he has refused to utter a single word in English. He loves to sit and poop on shoulders, play with long earrings, nibble hair, and generally behave in a pretty spoilt manner. We are hoping for great things from Billy but there have certainly been so signs as yet. Come on Billy, you're a true blue Ozzie, do the right thing. manner

It's a way to get back to basics, just relax and forget about the stresses we have in our lives, if only for a few days, we all should do it, often. Last weekend we all went camping. 'All' means friends, family and the foxies. We had a wonderful time, saw a couple of snakes, a goanna, heaps of birds, a kangaroo, several possums and hardly any people. IT WAS JUST PERFECT. One can easily pass up the conveniences for the sound of a bubbling creek, the song of birds, and time to read and chat with good mates over the camp fire in the evening. There is such a variety of small water birds here on the bay, we are so very lucky. One can observe them quiet easily, because at this time of year it seems they are everywhere. Just waiting for someone to come along and go 'click' with the camera, capturing another lovely memory of their day. I was fortunate enough to see these lovely little fellows, on the bank or knee deep in water, just hanging around catching up on all the goss, and telling a few good fishing stories I guess.

I've looked in my Field Guide of Aussie birds and I'm pretty sure amongst these little fellows there are some Black-Winged Stilts, if not, can some good person please leave me information, along with a comment, so I can correct my blog if need be. The Farmers Markets at Manly are wonderful, I visited there this morning at 6.30 a.m. there was plenty of parking and it was great to get in early. There is everything at The Farmers Markets, fresh fruit and vegies, gourmet items, fish, meat, lots of craft, clothing, etc. etc., It's a place with great atmosphere, you'll always see someone you know, and that of course creates the opportunity for a hot coffee or two. The Day in the Park at Manly last Sunday was great. There was fantastic live music, lots of people enjoying themselves, plenty of eats, craft, and perfect weather. A couple of old birds were seen standing around giving people
directions, they persisted for some time, I don't know if anyone had the manners to thank them.
It was a great day, thanks to all the hard work of the organizers.

What a glorious day for a stroll with Archie around the water front, the sun is shining the bay is as calm as a mill pond, and there's just a hint of cloud in the skies. I then snap a few shots to capture the mood of the day. After all this strenuous activity what could be nicer than to visit Boats Bar & Restaurant, say g'day, and have a coffee. Boats is in the heart of Manly and has been a great supporter of my work for some time now. A walk in the park.

Living here by the Bay we have lots of wonderful bush walks, our little Fox Terriers come with us, on the leash of course. There is Eddie, he's the old man of the group, Scout his devoted daughter, and then there is the mischievous little Archie, the 'new kid on the block'. Where we walk there are lots of birds, and I believe the odd Koala, although I haven't seen any as yet. It's peaceful and gives one time to get ones thoughts in perspective, apart from the exercise for both the doggies and ourselves. With the way our lives seem to heading these days, there seems very little time for a 'walk in the park'. It's so good to just get away from it all and relax under our beautiful blue Aussie skies. This pic is a 'once' beautiful old tree, however it's still majestic and imposing standing there in all its stark glory.

I can't believe its been so long since I've posted an entry, however, when I think back to just how hectic it's been in the last few weeks, it's certainly no wonder.

Here in lovely Manly Queensland we have a progressive Chamber of Commerce and each year they publish the Manly Harbour Village Magazine. It's a high quality glossy A4 size publication, telling of the activities in our lovely bay side community and proposed future development. I'm very happy because three of my photographs have been accepted for the 2009 publication. I can't wait for the magazine to be printed.

The St. John Vianney's School Community Art Showcase was held last weekend and was open to local artists, Oil, Water and Acrylic, also sculptors and photographers. It was a great event, well patronised with a very enthusiastic group of bidders at the auction on the Friday night. Each artist was allowed two entries to showcase and have for sale. One of my images has found a new home, a panoramic shot of the Manly Harbour Marina, 2 mtr x .5 mtr, taken in mid afternoon with a storm approaching from the south, thank you so much to the purchaser, I know you love it just as much as I do. Lovely fresh mushrooms - yummy.

Are you a lover of mushrooms but sometimes feel they are 'way to expensive for the budget this week'. Well there is a solution, and here is ours. We often purchase mushroom compost. It's sold in plastic wrap (as seen in the photo) and is easily transported in the car. We mostly use it to top dress the garden, as it contains no weeds. However, we haven't always used every portion of compost, and after leaving it outside, with no special treatment, we've been delighted to find wonderful fresh flavoursome mushrooms ready to pick. Last week we went fishing, I caught the first fish which was way too small and consequently was returned to the briny. However my daughter caught a 1.4 kg Grunter which we enjoyed for dinner that evening. I can't tell you how he tasted other than to say he was delicious. The Manly Marina is looking simply stunning today, lots of expensive and not so expensive pleasure craft, all sparkling in the sun. I'm not a sailor myself and prefer to admire boats rather than venture out on one.
